Scripture Focus
“And he told them a parable, saying, ‘The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, “What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?” And he said, “I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” But God said to him, “Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.’”
— Luke 12:16–21 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Jesus tells the story of a man who thought he had it all—barns full, future secure. But God calls him a fool, not because he was successful, but because he was storing up treasure in the wrong place. His life was rich in possessions but poor in purpose.
Sacred simplicity invites us to redefine wealth. To be rich toward God is to live with hearts invested in eternity, not in temporary gains. It’s to measure life not by what we can hold, but by how closely we walk with Christ.
Jesus, though rich beyond measure, became poor for us—not so we could build bigger barns, but so we could inherit the true riches of grace, mercy, and eternal life. The kingdom belongs to those who know their need and find their abundance in Him.
When we embrace this simplicity, we stop chasing what fades and start treasuring what lasts—His presence, His purposes, His promises. That is wealth no one can take.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Make me rich in You…
Exhale: I release what fades away.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
Pause when you feel pulled toward earthly measures of success.
Breathe deeply and remind your soul where true treasure lies.
Let this prayer reorient your heart throughout the day.
Practical Application
Reflect on where you’re currently “laying up treasure.” Are your time, thoughts, and affections invested in things that lead you closer to God? Choose one way today to invest in eternal things—through prayer, generosity, or serving others.
Journal Prompt
What does being “rich toward God” look like in your current season? Where is He inviting you to shift your focus from temporary to eternal?
Closing Prayer
Lord, teach me to value what You value. Free me from storing up what will not last. Help me to be rich in faith, love, and devotion to You. Let my life reflect the wealth of knowing You—and finding all I need in Your presence. Amen.
Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty
Truth reminds us that real treasure isn’t found in what we possess, but in who we know. Goodness flows from a heart aligned with God’s purposes. Beauty shines in a life invested in eternity. Today, seek to be rich toward God.
