"But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand."— Isaiah 64:8
"Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do."— Jeremiah 18:3-4
Devotional Reflection
Clay is an unremarkable substance on its own—dirt mixed with water. But in the hands of a skilled potter, it is shaped into something of beauty and purpose. The process, however, is not gentle. The potter presses, molds, and even breaks the clay to reshape it as he desires.
Jeremiah’s vision of the potter’s wheel reminds us that God is not finished with us yet. Sometimes, like the clay in His hands, we resist the shaping. We question the pressure, we struggle against His will, and we wonder why He allows difficulties to come. Yet, when the clay surrenders, the potter is able to form it into something greater than it was before.
Perhaps you feel like a vessel that has been broken, a life that has taken a turn you never expected. Remember this: the Potter does not discard the clay. He reworks it. He makes something new. If you find yourself in a season of refining, trust that He is shaping you into something more beautiful, more whole, more like Christ.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer: (Inhale) Lord, You are the Potter. (Exhale) I surrender to Your shaping hands.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
Pause in stillness. As you inhale, acknowledge God as the Potter. As you exhale, release your resistance, entrusting yourself fully to His hands.
Practical Application
Reflect on His Work. What areas of your life feel like they are being reshaped? Ask God to show you how He is molding you.
Surrender to the Process. Read Romans 9:20-21 and meditate on what it means to trust the Potter’s design.
Embrace the New Creation. Consider how God is reworking you into something even greater than before.
Journal Prompt
What areas of your life do you find hardest to surrender to God’s shaping? How might trusting Him as the Potter bring peace in the process?
Closing Prayer
Father, You are the Potter, and I am the clay. Forgive me when I resist Your hands, when I fear the process of being shaped. Help me to trust that You are forming me into something more beautiful than I could ever imagine. I surrender to You—do what is good in Your sight. Amen.
Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty
God is not finished with you yet. The shaping may be uncomfortable, the process may feel uncertain, but trust the hands of the Potter. He is forming you into a vessel for His glory.
